Many people will wear jewellery but not understand the difference between fashion and fine jewellery. The easiest way to separate the two would be down to the price although there are some other differences than just the price. It will also include the materials of the jewellery.
What Is Fashion Jewellery?
Fashion jewellery is also known as costume jewellery and these particular pieces won’t be made of precious materials such as Gold, Silver or platinum. The metals that costume jewellery will usually consist of copper, brass and aluminium.
Fashion jewellery can also consist of textiles or leather. Sometimes, fashion jewellery will have a base metal, such as those previously mentioned, with a thin layer of precious metal such as Gold, Silver or platinum. Fashion jewellery can also consist of a gemstone however these will not be “real” gemstones. They will usually be made out of plastic although they can also be made out of glass and crystal, creating the look and feel of a gemstone.
What Is Fine Jewellery?
Fine jewellery is the most expensive piece that people wear. These will be made of precious metals such as Gold, Silver and Platinum. Furthermore, any fine jewellery that has gemstones will usually be the real thing. The common gemstones for fine jewellery are diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds for vintage emerald rings.
Fine jewellery has a more luxurious look to it which is why it is preferred by many. Additionally, it will be much heavier than fashion jewellery which is why you feel the quality of the jewellery.
The Pros and Cons Of Fashion Jewellery
Fashion jewellery does have its benefits which fine jewellery doesn’t have. The first positive of fashion jewellery is that it is a lot cheaper compared to fine jewellery. Furthermore, it looks good for the price.
There are a lot of negatives to fashion jewellery. The first issue is that the quality of fashion jewellery is much weaker than fine jewellery. Therefore, it is difficult to repair fashion jewellery and sometimes can cause irreparable damage. Finally, fashion jewellery can also damage due to the heat and cannot be worn in the sun.
The Pros and Cons Of Fine Jewellery
Fine jewellery is a far better piece to wear with your outfit if you want to look more luxurious. However, you should expect to spend a lot more money on fine jewellery compared to fashion jewellery. As mentioned before, fine jewellery is far more durable than fashion jewellery and if it does damage, it is repairable.
Fine jewellery will usually be passed down through family heirlooms. For example, vintage sapphire engagement rings will often be passed through families to daughters and granddaughters.
If you are willing to spend more on jewellery and are looking for a more premium piece, fine jewellery is for you. If you are looking for more affordable jewellery that you will only wear when you are going out, fashion jewellery will be better for you. Fine jewellery can be worn all day which is another reason why it is much better.
