Here’s How to Get Kaley Cuoco’s Gorgeous Glow and Sexy Bangs in The Flight Attendant Season Two

The Flight Attendant season 2 immediately sets in motion a new mystery for Cassie Bowden (Emmy-nominated Kaley Cuoco) to entangle herself from, but perhaps the answer to the question we all want to know is, How do we get Cassie’s sexy-bombshell haircut and California-chic makeup?

While piecey bangs, long layers, and a messy top knot have become a Cassie/Cuoco staple, they’ve gotten a bit of an upgrade in season 2, which was by design and at a request from Cuoco herself. “I loved her makeup the first season,” makeup department head Erin Koplow tells Glamour. Koplow had previously overseen the makeup department for shows like For All Mankind and Nashville, and joined The Flight Attendant in season 2. “I said to Kaley, ‘Okay, I’m ready, we’re going to match it,’ and she said, ‘No, we’re going to make a change.’”

Koplow scoured Pinterest to give Cassie—who’s now sober, living in Los Angeles near the beach, and working as a CIA asset in addition to her day (and night) job as a flight attendant—a refresh. “I thought, Can we go with a softer version of herself? Not the signature eyeliner that you would see all the time, but monochromatic and soft, almost like a California beauty and just really natural. Nothing was too intense, and that was kind of the biggest change. And Kaley let me run with it. That meant her everyday look would just be really clean, and the eyes would match the cheeks, and the cheeks would match the lips.”

As for Cassie’s hair, the bangs are back, but in less of a curtain style and more piecey. “We wanted to open up the face a bit more so we could see more of Cassie,” hair department head Michael Marcellino (who has overseen your faves from Dead to Me to 24) tells Glamour. “We trimmed her bangs every other week.”

While Cassie’s everyday style is on the fast track to become the must-have cut and look of the summer, there’s also her alter-ego in the form of “gold-dress Cassie” (as she was called on set). That’s code for whenever our favorite messy heroine appears in the sequined gold dress from season 1 and has major bombshell hair with sexy makeup and loose curls. So how did Koplow and Marcellino achieve all the looks, and what did they use? Here, they give us the detailed run-down so you can create it yourself.

“Because we would go through so many changes, we had to make sure Kaley’s skin was really hydrated,” Koplow says. “We’d start with Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF40 for every makeup look of Cassie’s. Sometimes we would use the Squalane Facial Oil from Indie Lee. For prep/primer, Clarins SOS, and Laura Mercier Pure Canvas Primer was great. I used Indie Lee for her moisturizer as well, and then when we needed to make quick changes between the various Cassies, we were really big about using Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water to remove her eye makeup, and then the rest of her face we used The Honest Company’s Facial Wipes. Sometimes we would have five makeup and hair changes all in a few hours. That was the biggest thing—to just really protect her skin.”

“For Kaley’s undereye area, I used Neo Cutis: Lumiere Bio Restorative Eye Cream. And then throughout the day for a pick-me-up or to give a dewy look, I’d use Kerstin Florian’s Rehydrating Neroli Water, or Urban Decay De-Slick or Cover FX Illuminating Cover Spray for more of a shimmer spray. And then finally, I applied La Mer’s lip balm.

“For foundation, I’d use a few different ones, including the Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid, as well as the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua foundation 123. I would mix between the two, depending on the character of what we’re doing. Do we need a little bit heavier coverage, a nice even coverage, or is she going into nihilist Cassie or black-sweater Cassie? And for foundation blending, I’d use MAC’s 187 synthetic duo brush,” says Koplow.

“Kaley has the most beautiful doe eyes. The trick was to always have a top eyeliner on, slightly winged out, but not big definition. It was always a softer version. She always has a navy liner on whenever she’s the flight attendant. I used Trish McEvoy’s #50 angled eye lining brush, which is best for a precise tapered wing eye or a blended wing eye liner. And then my two favorite liners that we would use was MAC Teddy, or I would use Lancôme’s Le Crayon Khôl eyeliner in Black Coffee, which is kind of like an espresso, and then always smudge right into her lash line and then slightly would wing it out. For mascara, it was always Thrive Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara. That’s Kaley’s favorite. She just uses it straight, and it just elongates the lashes.“

Koplow continues, “I also love the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk line for Kaley’s cheeks, and also the Pillow Talk series for her everyday look.

“For the lips, if Kaley wanted it really natural, we would use a Burt’s Bees tinted balm in Pink Blossom or Nars Baby Pink Gloss. Pat McGrath has a sheer lip balm that we would use.”

How to get Cassie’s everyday haircut

Next time you go to the salon (or you can visit Marcellino himself at Estetica Salon in Woodland Hills, California) and ask for the Cassie, here’s his advice: “I would say extremely long layers and a little bit of razor work to create softness around the face for that jagged disconnection between bang and end. But not everybody’s hair will do that. It’s okay to be honest with your clients because everybody deserves to have their dreams fulfilled in the hair chair, so you do your best and try to give them what they want, but Kaley had pretty amazing hair to start with.”

But if you already have a similar cut, Marcellino suggests brushing your hair with Olivia Garden brushes (“I like a mix of boar hair and certain plastics”) and then using a two-inch or even three-inch barrel to get some waves and movement. Marcellino says Cuoco would always come with clean hair each day, and she’s a fan of Olaplex’s shampoo and conditioners. “I would always start by blowing her hair out with the Super Solano hairdryer and then putting it up in a clip and then send her off to makeup. And then she would come back to me for whatever look we started our day with,” he says.

Says Koplow: “We’d have 20 minutes to take her back to the trailer and change her head to toe, curl her hair, full body, full makeup. And Kaley is so on top of it, she’s like, ‘I don’t want to keep the crew waiting. Let’s see how quick we can do it.’ I think we went down to 12 minutes once. I used Era full-body foundation spray in Y5 and then buffed it, and it was beautiful.”

She continues, “Everything was all shimmer on the face too. I think we used MAC shimmers in Tempting and Bobbi Brown’s Antique Gold. I applied her eyeliner, which I blended and winged slightly, with MAC’s Teddy pencil. It has a little bit of a shimmer, which is so beautiful right on the eyes. And then right at the base inside, we would do a gel pen, a black, just to slightly wing it out, carry the eye shadow. The trick was also whatever shadow was on her eyes was going to be carried underneath it. There was never really ever any eyeliner underneath. Sometimes it looks like it because of the base of her lashes.

“I used the the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Moisture Concealer 4g, which I love. It’s a triple palette. And then the foundation was Koh Gen Do #123 Maifanshi Aqua Foundation again. And to give Kaley a bit of a glow as well, I used Stila’s powder highlighter in Opulence on her cheek bones,” says Koplow.

“For powder, I used Laura Mercier Lightening Under Eye and Chantecaille’s HD Transculent All Over powder, which I used to finish everything. For blush, I love Cargo blushes, especially the Miami Beach shade, which has this bronzy glow, that photographs beautifully. I also used the Guerlain Terracotta 02 Natural for bronzer. I’d kick it over on top of her nose or we’d brush it across,” Koplow explains.

“We punched up the lips for the gold-dress scenes with Neutrogena Stick #50 and layered it with Dior Gloss #256 Peach Sheer on top.”

Says Marcellino: “The key was not to use too much product or hairspray. When it came time to do gold-dress Cassie, I went in with two small curling irons, and I would start on one side because Erin would be doing the makeup on the other side. I used one- to two-inch barrel curling irons, usually the [Hot Tools] Marcel iron. So I was interchanging one- and two-inch barrels on the Marcel iron. And then I’d just get my hands right in there and massage at the root, and then just finger it out until we got that look.”

When Cassie has dinner with Annie, Max, and Marco at the restaurant Republique, in Los Angeles, and is wearing the coral or salmon suit jacket, Koplow used staples Koh Gen Doh Aqua 123 foundation and Koh Gen Doh Maifanshi Moisture Concealer, as well as Cargo blush in Sunset Beach, Guerlain Contour for bronzer on the cheeks and neck, and Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk blush on the apples of her cheeks. Again, Koplow set the look with Chantecaille’s HD Perfecting Powder Translucent.

For eyes, she used a mix of Laura Mercier and Pat McGrath shadows, and the MAC Teddy eyeliner on top, pairing it with a black gel pen to slightly wing the look and smudge it in with MAC Naked Under Eyes.

For Cassie’s lips, Koplow used Pat McGrath’s Sheer Blow Up lipstick and Buxom gloss in Samantha.

How to recreate Cassie’s cool-girl ponytail and topknot

Marcellino says, “The ponytail is backcombed with a couple of good tugs and a little bit of backcombing at the top of the pony. And then let it flow.”

If Cassie’s flight-attendant messy topknot/bun is what you’re after, Marcellino says, “It was a ponytail at the top, and then you twist it around and start pinning and wrap it around. Then Kaley would go in and pull on it to make sure that it was realistic and not perfect. But when I would do the perfect flight attendant [updo], I used a donut. I’d do the ponytail, get everything slick with a bit of product, slip on the donut and then wrap it around and pin it so it was absolutely perfect.”
